EMC330 - County Unit Activity

Sometimes it is interesting to read about the activities of another unit. So, let¹s see what the Sonoma County ACS unit has been doing. The following is extracted from the Spring 2001 "Disaster Blaster", an 8-page publication of the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Services, Santa Rosa, California covering activities of
interest to various agencies in that Operational Area (i.e., all political jurisdictions in that county.)

Extracts are from the page dedicated to the ACS program, titled 'Op Area ACS: "Open Mike"'

It started by listing those who participated in a previous Statewide Hospital exercise, during the prior November. Next was the ACS General Member meeting in January with over 50 members learning a about a neighboring county RACES response in a recent earthquake. Included was a demonstration of one of the State OES communications vehicles, and discussions on the Standardized Emergency Management System, Standard Operations Procedures and a local mountain repeater.

A demonstration of the Kenwood Visual Communicator (for an Emergency Coordinators Forum) was described where an image was "sent from the Santa Rosa Fire Tower to the Rohnert Park Emergency Operations Center to be placed in front of the Forum on a big screen TV."

Included was a reference to work planned on a "Communications Trailer to be primed for another season when it will serve as the Incident Command Post at Sears Point". Work included the "install of a digital phone jack, a new Uniden Trunk Tracker III scanner, new tires and an electric tongue jack."

Other improvements were to "the Auxiliary Communications Center (ACC) at the EOC" (Emergency Operations Center of the Sonoma Operational Area) which was to "soon get a new Kenwood All Mode - All Band TS-2000 installation" - this is a radio that can cover the important FCC Radio Amateur Service "bands of HF, 50 MHZ, 144 MHZ, 440 MHZ and 1200 MHZ with a built-in antenna tuner." Of course, new antennas were to be put up before it could be used.

ACS Members learned about "upcoming training including an operators orientation in the Auxiliary Communications Center, and Communications Trailer (2929) operations."

The page closed with a reminder that the "ACS was planning a major, full-scale exercise that summer; that a working group had been formed to plan and manage the exercise."

On that page in the county publication was a black/white photo of ACS members attending the general meeting, along with a notation that "the County Volunteer Recognition Dinner was scheduled for a day in April 4-6 pm and invites were in the mail." It closed with this item "stay tuned for training and exercises coming this summer!!!" Visit their web URL at http://sonoma-county-acs.org/.

The Bulletins are addressed to the Emergency Management Agency (with sub-addresses to others) with the intent that the Radio Officer, ACS Coordinator or other unit participant will deliver them to the agency coordinator, and discuss their topics.
