QSL Card for my first POTA Activation

3/7/2026

I've done some park hunting on FT-8, but this card is for contacts during activation of my first POTA Park! I've stayed at a rest area in the White River National Forest several times now, and one afternoon I decided to take the plunge and activate the forest (US-4410). The picture is taken at the summit of Loveland Pass (elevation 11,990 feet), along US Highway 6 in Colorado, but the activation location is at the Vail Pass Rest Area (Second map below).

This card will only be used to confirm contacts from that POTA location. If/When I activate other locations, I will create cards for those locations.

At some point in the future, I may create a generic POTA card, or I may just add the POTA logo to a couple of my other cards. I'm still thinking about long term cards.

The picture behind this card came about while sitting in traffic on Interstate 70, just west of Idaho Springs, Colorado. I was looking around at the surrounding mountains and taking a bunch of pictures. This one looks really pretty against the blue sky.  So, why not share it?

This card is based on a picture I took of the 10 Mile Range, located near Frisco, Colorado.  This mountain starts near Frisco, and runs pretty much south for 10 miles, hence the name. This picture contains part of Peak One (on the left side) and Ten Mile Peak (on the right).

The picture was taken from the Officer's Gulch trailhead parking area.

Because of the contrasting colors of the mountainside, I had to add a shaded box behind the address info and the antenna info, to make them easier to read.

This card is based on a picture I snapped while on US-6, headed up Loveland Pass in Colorado. The wind was blowing down the canyon, and blowing the snow off the trees.

The actual summit of Loveland Pass is visible directly below the first N in my callsign.

This is my first QSL Card design based on a Colorado photo.

I snapped this photo at the Vail Pass Rest Area, at the summit of Vail Pass on I-70. The summit of Vail Pass is 10,662 feet above sea level (ASL). The rest area is just east of the summit, and shows an elevation of 10,544 feet ASL, according to my GPS.

The segment of I-70 over Vail Pass was completed in 1978, The challenge in constructing the pass was that the designers wanted the highway to blend in with the natural environment as much as possible. One of the ways that they accomplished this was by tinting the concrete a little red, to match the surrounding landscape.

The photo on this card was taken on September 30, 2025, just south of St. George, Utah. It had rained overnight, and the sun was coming up (behind me), catching the clouds and mountain tops with sunlight.

This card has nothing to do with an actual operating location that I've used. It is a picture that I snapped while going through the Virgin River Gorge, in Northwestern Arizona.

The National Park Service has this to say about the Old Spanish National Historic Trail:

"Follow the routes of mule pack trains across the Southwest on the Old Spanish National Historic Trail between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, California. New Mexican traders moved locally produced merchandise across what are now six states to exchange for mules and horses."

Supposedly this location is along part of one of the trails. And there are some neat mule silhouettes that are lit at night. Sounds like a good card design to me.

I was making a delivery at a Las Vegas area airport, with double trailers (11,500 gallons of jet fuel), and snapped this quick picture to send to my wife.  I liked it enough to create a card with it.

This card is a little different, because it doesn't show off scenery or a neat location. It's just a glamour shot of my truck and some shiny trailers.

I found this location almost by accident. It's located along a 6% grade on Interstate 15, between San Bernardino, California and Victorville, California. As I was chugging by at 28 miles per hour, I noted that the pull-off was just big enough to get the truck off the road, and safely parked.

I kept it in the back of my mind as a location to stop if I ran out of drive/work hours in traffic, since there are not many parking areas for trucks in Southern California. We're not supposed to park on the side of the highway, either. But, when you run out of hours, Federal law states that we must stop in a safe location. This pretty much fits the bill, since it's small and allows me to get far enough from the highway to be safe (there are guardrails on both sides of the pull-off area.

I launched the drone early in the morning, which is why the picture is a bit dark. The sun wasn't up, but I wanted to catch the train climbing the grade in the background.  I may rework this card in the future with another photo of that area, showing the gradient a little better.
